Well, I did it!
I finished my first 5k! It was rainy, it was tough, but I got through it.
On Sunday morning, I woke up to this:
I bolted out of bed at 7:30. I was pretty nervous the night before and could barely sleep, so when my alarm went off I thought, “let’s do this!”
Venturing out into the pouring rain was NOT fun, but Chris and I made our way to Braintree, parked and headed into the registration building. We had about an hour to kill before the race so we did some warm-ups, picked up our bibs and waited around.
I wish I had my camera at the beginning of the race. I have never experience such an adrenaline rush. I couldn’t shake the chill going down my spine after I heard the words, “Get ready, get set, Go!”
Mile one went crazy fast. We started heading up a hill when I saw Allie and Sara, standing in the pouring rain, holding a sign for me. I sped up even faster.
Spot me?! I’m in the back, waving at Allie!
I didn’t wear my Garmin because I didn’t want to keep looking down at my watch, so I had no idea what pace I was at. Luckily, Chris was with me and keeping track, but he never told me how fast I actually ran the first mile until the race was over. Mile 1: 8:05!
Now it makes sense why the race went downhill from here. I went way too fast! The second mile made me want to stop and crawl into bed. I wore myself out.
At this point, Chris kept saying, “Come on, you can do this!” My mind said, “Speed it up!” My body said, “I’m dyinngggg.”
The last mile seemed like it went on forever, but once I saw people turning the corner towards the finish, I couldn’t believe it was over.
I finished in 31:22. It wasn’t my ideal time, but I DID IT!
I couldn’t believe I actually ran a race!

Note to self: Don’t wear mascara on a race day. WHAT was I thinking? Hello raccoon eyes.
Now I have this to hang on my wall
I still can’t believe it happened. It’s over. It’s a blur. My legs are still killing me. But I did it!

Go you! That’s awesome! I just started running today. I couldn’t run one mile without wheezing and feeling like I was going to die. Congrats on your first race!
Congrats on running your first 5K!! I just ran my first one last weekend. I just decided two days before that I was going to do it and went for it! It was the best feeling in the world and as soon as I finished, I wanted to sign up for another!! I’m not sure if I’ll ever want to run more than a 5K because I find the actual running part kind of miserable – haha. But I love the way I feel when I’m done!!
Congrats! Thats my goal! I just started to run again- heading back out tomorrow. I’m from boston too
Amazing job!!! When’s your next one!? Haha!
Congrats on your race! It always feels great to complete something you’ve been wanting to do
CONGRATS!!! Doesn’t it feel fabulous crossing that finish line?! I actually haven’t run a race since high school, but I’m planning on doing a half marathon in the fall or next spring. I’ve become passionate about running again (after a six year hiatus haha), and am so invigorated by it! Do you think you’ll run another race soon?
Good for you! In the rain too – impressive!
Congrats! You did a great job.
CONGRATS! you did amazing and should be very proud of yourself
WOOT WOOT!
Congrats Burgs!!! That’s so awesome!! (Congrats to Chris too!)
Congrats! I know that awesome feeling. I ran my first half marthon in May and was totally shocked and numb when I reached the finish line. I, too, hung up my bib
Congrats!! That’s an awesome time…I’m so glad your foot didn’t bother you. When’s your next race!?
Congrats, Alexa! You must be so proud of yourself….as you should be!
Congrats on your first race! The rain must have been such a bummer, but that’s awesome that you didn’t let it stop you from rocking the run!
